Brian Balmages – High School Clinician 

Brian Balmages (b. 1975) is an award-winning composer, conductor, producer, and performer. His music for winds, brass, and orchestra has been performed in countries throughout the world. His active schedule of commissions and premieres has incorporated groups ranging from elementary schools to professional ensembles including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Miami Symphony Orchestra, the University of Miami Wind Ensemble, Boston Brass, Off Bass Brass, and the Dominion Brass Ensemble. His music has been performed by members of leading orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, St. Louis Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Chicago Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, National Symphony, and others. World premieres have included prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. His music was also performed as part of the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service, which was attended by both President Obama and Vice President Biden.

He received his bachelor’s degree in music from James Madison University and his master’s degree from the University of Miami in Florida. He is a recipient of the prestigious A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association and was also featured in James Madison University’s “Be the Change” campaign.

As a conductor, Mr. Balmages has enjoyed engagements with numerous all-state and regional bands and orchestras as well as university and professional groups. Notable guest conducting appearances have included the Midwest Clinic, Western International Band Clinic, College Band Directors Eastern Regional Conference, American School Band Directors Association National Conference and others. Additional conducting appearances have included the Kennedy Center and Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. He has also served as an adjunct professor of instrumental conducting and Acting Symphonic Band Director at Towson University in Maryland.

Currently, he is Director of Instrumental Publications for The FJH Music Company Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He resides in Baltimore with his wife Lisa and their two sons.

Chris Lindley – Middle School Clinician

Chris Lindley has been a band director for the past 21 years. He holds the Bachelors of Music Education from Jacksonville State University (1996) and the Masters of Arts from The University of Alabama (2004).  He has previously taught at Carbon Hill High School, Saks High School, and is currently in his 16th year as Band Director at Albertville High School.

Mr. Lindley came to Albertville High School in 2001.  Since that time, the Albertville Aggie Band has performed in the 2003 Hollywood Christmas Parade, in Nassau, Bahamas in 2005 and 2008, and in the 2007 Macy*s Thanksgiving Day Parade. In 2009, the Aggie Band performed in Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves.  The Albertville Aggie Band was honored to march in the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, and since then has performed in the 2012 Chicago Magnificent Mile Festival of Lights Parade and the 2014 Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade.  This past October, the Aggie Band was selected to make its 2nd appearance in the Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 2018.

In the concert band realm, the Albertville Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Bands have received consistent Superior Ratings at the Alabama State Concert Band Assessment, having received the “With Distinction” Citation since its inception in 2009.

Mr. Lindley is an active judge and guest clinician across the southeast and has toured as a brass staff member with Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps.  Chris keeps a busy schedule as Principal Horn of the Gadsden Symphony Orchestra, and has performed with the Georgia Philharmonic, Rome Symphony Orchestra, Lagrange Symphony Orchestra, and the Shoals Symphony Orchestra.  In addition, Mr. Lindley was an adjunct horn instructor at Jacksonville State University and performed with the JSU Faculty Brass Quintet.

Chris is married to Missy Lindley, band director at Albertville Middle School, and they have 15 year old twin girls, Haley and Katelyn.


Honor Band Schedule

Friday, February 16         

  • 5:30 PM – Seating of Bands
  • High School in the auditorium (Wire stands needed Saturday afternoon)
  • Middle School in the band room (Wire Stands needed)
  • 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM – Rehearsal

Saturday, February 17

  • 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM – High School Rehearsal
  • 8:30 AM – 11:45 AM – Middle School Rehearsal
  • Lunch (on your own)
  • 1:00 PM –  4:00 PM – Rehearsal (bands will swap rehearsal locations)
  • 4:00 PM –  7:00 PM – Dinner (on your own) and dress for concert
  • 6:30 PM  –  MS on stage/HS in designated area in audience
  • 7:00 PM     Concert – Middle School performs first, followed by High School


  • Attendance at all rehearsals is mandatory. Absence from a rehearsal could result in removal from the honor band.
  • Students should wear their school’s concert uniform for the Saturday evening performance.
  • Students should not have cell phones/digital devices out during rehearsals.
